"Mary is so closely united to Jesus because she received from him the knowledge of the heart, the knowledge of faith, nourished by her experience as a mother and by her close relationship with her Son. The Blessed Virgin is the woman of faith who made room for God in her heart and in her plans; she is the believer capable of perceiving in the gift of her Son the coming of that “fullness of time” (Gal 4:4) in which God, by choosing the humble path of human existence, entered personally into the history of salvation." Pope Francis' homily on the solemnity of Mary Mother of God, 2015
For many of us, the new year brings long lists and lofty goals. Healthy bodies, organized minds, beautiful homes, happy children, thriving businesses. I'm right there, too. Because planning, dreaming, and striving to be better are natural - and admirable. But when is the last time I sat down and prayed for God's guidance? To make room for Him in my life, my dreams, my goals. To take His plan, not my own, into consideration. When was the last time I asked God what He wanted for my life?
Mary had plans of her own, I'm sure. Dreams and goals and beautiful things that inspired her. She was human, just like me. But at the same time, not like me at all. She left room for God - something I fail so often to do.
As we head into the new year, I challenge you to leave room for God in your heart. To find some quiet space in your busy life and ask Him what He wants for your life, for this year. To set beautiful goals, but to set them alongside His will. To look to Mary, Christ's mother, for an example of obedience, faith, and love.
With the strength of Jesus, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the example and intercession of Mama Mary, we can do this.
What are God's plans for your life, this year?
