One of the first questions people have about cloth diapers (other than "will I have to touch poop?") is usually about how to wash them. I remember growing Lily In my belly, gathering up all of our cute little diapers, and having no idea where to start with them. I know there are so many "right" ways to wash cloth diapers, and everyone who does will have their favorite method, but I thought it might be helpful and fun to share how we wash ours!
Our diapers go through three full wash cycles, and I wash them every few days now that Lily is two (I'm sure once baby brother is here it will be much more often!). For the first wash, I always wash them with the hottest water at the highest level possible, and add one to two spoonfuls of Rockin Green detergent depending on how big and messy the load is. I've used this detergent since Lily was born and have never had any problems, even with her eczema -- we love it so much that we use it for all of our laundry! For the second load, I don't add anything else (no more soap or anything) and use hot water on high/large load. For the third load -- here's where it gets real thrilling haha -- I add a few drops of Purification and Lavender to the water once it's filled (or if it's a front loading machine like we have here in California, I add the drops to one of the wipes -- making sure I don't put them directly onto the oils in case that messes with them). And again, hot water on high water level. When you're married to a medical student who spends his days in a hospital, you wash all your laundry in the hottest water possible. ;)
To dry them, I know a lot of people's prefer to hang them to dry, but that isn't realistic for us since we can't put them outside on our patio (according to apartment complex rules), and we don't have anywhere inside to hang them. So, I dry them on low heat, sometimes using Woolzies wool dryer balls to soften them up and speed up the drying process, sometimes adding one more drop of lavender to make them smell super nice.
So that's how we keep our diapers clean and smelling lovely! Every once in a while, I'll add a cup of vinegar to the first wash if I feel like they are getting buildup on them, but it usually is as easy as that! If you cloth diaper, how do you like to wash them? I'd love to hear!
