Here are some of my favorite ways to make our home into a happy place to be. I know there are days when I find myself just being grumpy all around and keeping these ideas in mind usually helps me turn things around and make the day brighter, more joyful, and generally better for all of us. Because if mama's not happy, nobody's happy ;)
Ask your children to help you with household tasks, and make them a fun activity. Lily is almost three and she can help with: hand washing and drying the dishes, loading the laundry into the washer and dryer, swiffer-ing the floors, picking up toys, setting the table, and more. Doing household tasks together makes everything more fun and teaches her how to manage a home.
Listen to music and dance around the house. Don't be too proud to have a dance party!
Diffuse essential oils, light a candle, use a wax-melting thing -- make your house smell happy.
Create a Sacred Space in your home (for inspiration, read this post on Blessed Is She).
Get some fresh air & natural light. Open the windows if the weather permits, open the curtains always.
Eat simply. Meals don't all have to be fancy or a big deal.
Keep the table cleared off & the floors clean. If nothing else, keeping these two areas clean makes such a difference in the way things look & feel.
Put art on the walls. It doesn't have to be expensive or fancy -- it can be a print from a favorite Etsy shop, a painting you or your children made, or a hand-lettered quote.
Say "yes"; remember that "children are not a distraction from the more important work, they are the most important work." Mothering is our vocation and should be lived out joyfully!
