These monthly summaries are based on the USCCB's Liturgical Calendar and the Church's monthly devotions, alongside some of my own ideas that we use in our home. If you are new to the Church like we are, start small with one or two feast days per month and then grow your family traditions as you can! I've made up a free printable of this page (at the bottom of this post) that I like to hang up on our wall, that way I'll remember the feast days and be inspired throughout the month. This is meant to be an encouraging way to walk in step with the Church (not to be a burden!).
This month's Themes & Devotions
The Seven Sorrows of Mary
The Birth of Mary and Her Role as Christ's Mother
The Angels & Archangels
and a celebration of the coming of autumn and harvest
We do our best to honor these Feasts and Solemnities
I chose five from this list and have tried to commit to do something special for these days, even if just a special prayer at dinner. The fun thing about being Catholic (well, one of them) is that every day is a feast/memorial/solemnity for somebody, so we can feel free to celebrate as often as we are able! We can also note that, aside from Sundays, there are no Holy Days of Obligation this month.
September 5: Blessed Mother Teresa (also important: she will be canonized on September 4th this year!)
September 8: The Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary
September 14: Triumph of the Holy Cross
September 21: Saint Matthew
September 29: Saints Michael, Gabriel, & Raphael (also called Michaelmas)
This Month's Liturgical Season is (still) Ordinary Time
Ordinary Time is a time for growth and maturation, a time in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history until all things are finally caught up in Christ. - USCCB
The Holy Father’s Intentions for This Month
"That each may contribute to the common good and to the building of a society that places the human person at the center," and "That by participating in the Sacraments and meditating on Scripture, Christians may become more aware of their mission to evangelize," (See all of his intentions for every month here).
Scripture Passages for this Month
"And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a signthat is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” Luke 2:34-35
"He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness." 2 Corinthians 9:10
